5 Things to know about the Nov. 3 election

Wochit

Three candidates are vying for the Camarillo City Council District 3 seat.

The district was created after Camarillo switched to a district-based election model from an at-large system in 2019. It covers approximately 12,739 residents and makes up the middle section of the city, stretching between Lewis Road and Las Posas Road south of Highway 101, and from Lewis Road to Adolfo Road north of Highway 101.

The incumbent is Kevin Kildee, who was first elected to City Council in 1996. Two other candidates are running to challenge Kildee for his seat: Karlton Huss, a local business owner in Old Town Camarillo, and Tiffany Lewis, a senior project manager.

If elected to the Camarillo City Council, what are the top three goals you would work to accomplish?

My top three goals are to:ensure public safety, minimize overbuilding and lead businesses out of COVID-19 restrictions.

Local police is, has and always will be the largest responsibility of a local government.  I will ensure that the services provided by The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department are fully funded and pledge to enhance those services to ensure efficient operations and to account for our growing population.

Our small town is built on a base of single-family dwellings surrounded by open space.  Ultra-high density housing with ever expanding borders is something the voters of Camarillo decided against year over year. I oppose turning Camarillo and Pleasant Valley into another San Fernando Valley by building large scale, high density developments like those seen in Wagon Wheel.

I have been asked “what needs to be done to get business back up and running after COVID?” The answer is: Government needs to get out of the way! Shutdowns must end, service restrictions must be lifted, and our children need to trick-or-treat!  We have all learned how to wash our hands, clean our countertops, stay home when we are sick, and have already spent our “15 days to flatten the curve.”

If re-elected to the Camarillo City Council, what are the top three goals you would work to accomplish?

The Camarillo Economy: We have been able to implement several programs so far, such as a business recovery loan program up to $1 million, a business grant program for Camarillo businesses up to $5,000 per business (and $1 million total), and the speedy approval of Temporary Outdoor Business Safety Reimbursement Program (up to $250,000) for barriers and other safety measures. We will continue to monitor this situation and are prepared to enhance these programs as needed, as well as continuing to attract and expand our businesses community in Camarillo.

Public Safety: I believe it is necessary to continue to provide adequate funding for police and fire departments. This will ensure that they have the means necessary to do their critical job of keeping our residents and community safe. Furthermore, it is important to continue to work on the budget so that we have adequate levels of funding and training during this ever-changing time.

“Engage Camarillo”: This is a new program for our city that launched last month. It will enable us to reach out to our citizens and engage with them in the digital media, thus interacting with our constituents in a meaningful way. This is a forward thinking program that will use technology as a basis for communication.
