How to watch Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade 2020: Livestream, social media and more

Good morning, all. Happy Thanksgiving 2020.

In yet another reminder of the Covid-19 pandemic’s impact, the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York is continuing, but without the crowds and hundreds of volunteers who make it happen every year.

The parade will, however, still air in living rooms across the country as you Zoom with grandma and grandpa over turkey and pumpkin pie. (Hopefully they’ve figured out how to use Zoom by now.)

The 94th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will scale back on its typical 2.5-mile route in order to prevent large crowds. It will travel from Central Park West to Herald Square.

Instead of having 80-100 handlers, some balloons will be outfitted with a “specially rigged anchor tether framework of five specialty vehicles,” according to Macy’s and NBC.

Because it was filmed in segments, the only way to see the parades, performances and commentary is on TV

The Day – Health officials make final pleas for holiday caution as coronavirus cases spike

WASHINGTON – With nationwide coronavirus hospitalizations topping 80,000 and case counts on the cusp of 200,000 a day, officials and experts are giving their final pleas for caution in the days before Thanksgiving.

It looked different this year, but National Adoption Day in N.J. was as loving as always

Julisa, 8, hugged her grandparents after a judge finalized her adoption Friday over Zoom in their Newark home to make the couple her legal guardians.

Her grandparents, Reynaldo and Secundina Peña, began to cry a little, but there was no time for tears. A surprise was in store for them almost immediately after.

“Somebody said ‘Oh look the parade is starting,’” Julisa recounted, and then the family put on their shoes and walked out the door.

Greeting them was a caravan of superheroes and more than a dozen vehicles, including police and fire trucks. Four other families who finalized adoptions Friday were along the motorcade’s route, too.

“(I) felt rejoice in my heart,” said Secundina Peña in Spanish through a translator, of the adoption proceeding over Zoom. “It was times two when the parade came.”

Board schedules make-up day for spring | News

The conversion of class days to vacation days at Homer-Center School District — in order to extend the Thanksgiving holiday and create more idle time to alleviate the spread of COVID-19 in the schools — has been balanced with the addition of a class day in the spring.

The school district board of directors Thursday agreed to designate April 6, scheduled as a snow day, as a make-up day for Tuesday, which has been designated as a day off for the students and staff.

Also in conjunction with the pandemic, the board approved a resolution to grant pension-qualified sick days for absences related to coronavirus. The board voted 7 to 1 on the resolution with directors Michael Bertig, Gerald Bertig, Dan Fabin, Joe Iezzi Jr., James McLoughlin, Michael Schmidt and Robert Valyo in favor and Vicki Smith opposed. Oxford recognizes Veterans Day with necessary changes

Prestigious La Jolla Country Day School tells student to remove ‘offensive’ MAGA hat –

LA JOLLA (KUSI) – KUSI News has obtained an email sent to all staff from La Jolla County Day’s Head of School, Gary Krahn.

The controversy that emerged from Krahn’s email to LJCD staff is in regards to one of their students showing up to school wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat.

Krahn’s email reads, “We also had a student wear a MAGA Hat today. I have talked with that student who now understands why that hat is offensive to our community. He will not wear it again. In addition his mom said that she is embarrassed by his actions. She will fulfill her role as a parent. We will continue to grow as a community that sees and values the dignity of all people.”

Day trips satisfy retirees’ itch to travel despite pandemic

When the coronavirus pandemic hit, Jeannie Morrison and fiancé Renny Lopez started pondering how to get out of town without catching COVID-19.

“We traveled all the time before –– California, New York, Canada, Hawaii,” says Lopez, 71. “Since the pandemic, we’ve been afraid to fly. We canceled our trip to Costa Rica.”

The couple, who both live in Dallas, realized they could still enjoy a beautiful change of scenery by making day trips to Texas state parks.

“They’re all so wonderful, and we feel totally safe because they limit capacity,” says Morrison, 74. “They’re very clean, particularly now. They are beautifully maintained.”

An added benefit, Lopez says, is the ease of travel. “They’re at most an hour and 30 minutes away. It’s very easy to visit and be home by 5:30,” says Lopez, a retired courier.

Thank a hunter for funding conservation this opening day

This Sunday is opening day of deer season, marking an unofficial holiday for sportsmen and sportswomen across our great state. Although I’ve only hunted a few times, I try to get out and appreciate our state’s natural beauty as often as I can.

As an avid hiker and backpacker, I’ve enjoyed hiking hundreds of miles of the North Country Trail, backpacking along the Lake Superior shoreline in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, camping near Lake Michigan in the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness, and going for a trail run near my home at Yankee Springs Recreation Area. I’ve been able to experience and appreciate Michigan’s outdoors without breaking the bank, just like millions of other local residents, thanks to our hunters.

Our state’s hunting and fishing community are the main source of funding for the preservation and management of our natural resources, Johnson writes.
