Active Living Every Day classes are designed to result in physical and mental benefits.

PMG FILE PHOTO: JAIME VALDEZ - Sara Shepherd is the supervisor of the Juanita Pohl Center in Tualatin.Tualatin’s Juanita Pohl Center is again hosting a remote Active Living Every Day class beginning Tuesday, May 11, and continuing through Aug. 3.

The Tuesday classes will run from 1 to 2 p.m., held via Zoom.

“Many of us have started exercise programs in the past only to lose motivation because of a busy home or work schedule,” Sara Shepherd, Juanita Pohl Center supervisor, wrote in a news release. “Others find the thought of committing to a gym routine several times a week intimidating. If this sounds familiar to you, but you still wish you could get active, there are options.”

The Active Living Every Day program, or ALED, is based on research that shows that a person’s health can be improved by including 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity, 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity, or a combination of both. Research shows that those who learn appropriate lifestyle skills become or stay physically active.

Shepherd said the Active Living Every Day is a 12-week program that will help teach participants how to make lifestyle changes by overcoming barriers to physical activities, setting realistic goals and staying motivated. Added perks include new friendships and a positive support system. The program is expected to provide more energy, a brighter mental outlook, improved sleep and other healthy outcomes as well.

“It’s easier than you think,” said Shepherd. “Active Living Every Day will show you simple ways to fit physical activity into your daily life, such as taking short walks during breaks at work, or using the stairs instead of the elevator.”

The remote session will include electronic tablets, motivational incentives and technology assistance if needed.

“For me, the program has changed everything. I was experiencing a lot of joint pain and more limited mobility and when I saw the curriculum I thought this might be very helpful for me,” wrote one ALED participant. “It changed everything for me.”

Cost is $24 per person, which includes the class, an ALED book and the ALED online course.

The first 10 people to register will receive a $20 gift card.
