An effort to keep Manitowoc’s Eternal Flame burning is closing in on its $200K goal

The Save the Flame fund to keep the Manitowoc Eternal Flame burning is now at about 75% of its $200,000 goal, according to Manitowoc County United Veterans Council Chairman Tom Hoffman.

The Eternal Flame is inside the Soldiers and Sailors monument on North 18th Street in Manitowoc, near Evergreen Cemetery. The monument was erected in 1923 to honor Manitowoc County veterans, and the flame was added in 1969. Later, in 1986, the Manitowoc County Veterans Memorial, across the street from the monument, was dedicated.

The flame has been turned off in the past because of fuel and repair costs. The $200,000 goal was set because organizers believe that amount would generate enough funds to never touch the principal amount and to make the flame fund eternal.

On Veterans Day Nov. 11, Hoffman said the Manitowoc County United Veterans Council’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony at the monuments on North 18th Street will include the unveiling of names of all people and businesses that have donated $1,000 or more to the Save the Flame fund. Hoffman said the names will be put on the back of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Stone.

The public is invited to attend the Veterans Day ceremony, which will start at 10:40 a.m. Nov. 11 with a firing salute to all veterans on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

“It would be great to see a lot of people gathered to honor our veterans who sacrificed so much for our wonderful free country and also to thank all who is helping to keep our flame burning for many years to come,” Hoffman said.

To make a tax-refundable donation to the Eternal Flame Fund, make checks payable to Eternal Flame Fund, c/o Bank First National, P.O. Box 10, Manitowoc WI, 54220. Donations can also be made to the City Treasurer or to Lakeshore Community Foundation.
