Classic PC dungeon-crawler RPG Diablo II is getting a new lease on life.
Blizzard announced Diablo II Resurrected during BlizzCon 2021’s online event, Polygon reports. The remastered edition features both the base game and the Lord of Destruction expansion.
It’s been 21 years since the PC original debuted, so it’s in need of a few enhancements. But Diablo executive producer Rod Fergusson tells Polygon that Resurrected isn’t a remake. It’s meant to be a faithful recreation of the original, with a few bells and whistles added for good measure.
“We’re not reverse-engineering it; we’re not rebuilding it and trying to make it look and sound like [Diablo 2],” says Fergusson. “So there’s a toggle switch, a legacy toggle, that when you press the button, you’ll see behind the curtains, and there is Diablo 2 in 2D sprites running right there, and you can play the way that you played 20 years ago.”
This is the second time a Diablo remake will head to retail. Blizzard and GOG.com brought the original Diablo back from the dead in 2019. It offered the 1996 classic, with Battle.net matchmaking support, as well as a “DX” version optimized for Windows 10.
Diablo II Resurrected is on its way to Xbox Series X and Series S, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC later in 2021.
