The Barnstable Youth Commission is hosting an extended run of its 5th annual youth summer job fair virtually through June this year.
Last year, 32 businesses participated and 266 applicants, representing 21 schools from as far away as Texas, attended the two-hour event.
Due to pandemic gathering restrictions, it is not possible to use the gymnasium at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center this year, Patti Machado, director of Recreation, said in a press release Tuesday.
So the Youth Commission came up with an idea to allow businesses to interact with eager first-time job-seekers over an extended time, so that more businesses and students can participate.
Businesses that hire summer applicants at ages 14-17 and are interested in participating are invited to sign up at https://bit.ly/3vbUnTg
Participating businesses also may sign up to have their company name and an online application linked to the Youth Commission’s web page, which will be heavily promoted through peer groups and school communications.
Students soon will be able to sign up for a zoom session (date and time to be determined) with business owners representing various business sectors like restaurants, retail, recreation programs, and lodging who will interact with job seekers and set up interviews.
Space is limited for these sessions, and a link for an application will be provided to students once the sessions are scheduled.
The Barnstable Youth Commission (BYC) is a group of students representing Barnstable High School, Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical High School, Sturgis Charter Public High School (East and West campuses), St. John Paul II High School, and Sandwich High School.
Members are appointed by the Town Council and advised by community members. The BYC works with the staff of the Community Services Department’s Recreation Division. Their goal is to make the town a better place for the youth of today and tomorrow.
The BYC Job Fair partners with the Barnstable Recreation Division of the Community Services Department and the Economic Development Program of the Planning and Development Department, as well as Barnstable High School and Mass-Hire.
