The beginning of the pandemic saw huge hand sanitizer shortages. And with all the Walgreens’ shelves and digital aisles of Amazon emptied of their Purell, upstart manufacturers rushed to fill the void. You likely found yourself shopping for hand sanitizer from unusual brands you may have never previously heard of on strange but delightful websites. Well, just because your local drug store is are again stocked with hand sanitizer doesn’t mean you have to go back to the boring stuff. The hand sanitizer you’ll get from a boutique skincare retailer, or even a distillery—hand sanitizer is mostly ethyl alcohol, after all—is just as protective as Purell or Germ-X. And often, it smells and feels a lot better on your skin.
It’s worth noting that hand sanitizer isn’t your main line of defense against the spread of the Coronavirus. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, much more important are socially distancing, wearing a mask outside, not touching your face, and hand washing—often—for at least 20 seconds. When hand soap and a sink aren’t always available, a bottle of hand sanitizer, hand rubs, or pack of hand sanitizer wipes fills the void. Just make sure it fills the CDC requirement of being more than 60% alcohol, and that the company making it hasn’t been the subject of a recall from the FDA.
If you already have a small container to reclaim (reducing single-use plastics FTW), and just want a big refill bottle of hand sanitizer, we’ve listed those at the bottom of this post. And, if you’re looking for face masks, we’ve got you covered there as well.
