DOG-HEALTHY ACTIVITIES

Maybe Fido’s looking for a way to get some exercise and make new friends. If so, try one of the dog parks or trails in and around Fayetteville.

• Riverside Dog Park: 555 N.Eastern Blvd., 910-433-1547. The park features two fenced areas. One is for smaller dogs weighing less than 25 pounds; the other is for the big dogs. All dogs, regardless of size, must be legally licensed, current on vaccinations and have tags securely attached to collars. Dogs outside the fenced area must be on a leash.

• Cape Fear River Trail: A scenic walk on a paved trail along the bluffs of the Cape Fear River. Many walkers bring their leashed dogs. Access the trail from Jordan Soccer Complex near Methodist University off Ramsey Street, or to the south (which has fewer hills) on Sherman Drive in Clark Park or at the end of Eastwood Avenue. Follow the signs. Contact Fayetteville-Cumberland County Parks & Recreation for information.

• Mazarick Park: 1400 Belvedere Ave., 910-433-1575. BringFido publicizes the 80-acre park that includes lake fishing, trails and game areas as dog-friendly. Dog owners are reminded to keep pups leashed and to clean up any mess left behind.

• Spring Lake Outpost: 1530 N. Bragg Blvd., Spring Lake, 910-248-3409. The Spring Lake Outpost, a seasonal kayak and canoe rental company in Spring Lake, schedules outings on the Little River. Customers can rent paddles, life jackets and kayaks for three-hour periods, and the business Instagram page features dog owners taking their pooches along for the adventure.
