Heard on Main Street: The closer the roll of toilet paper gets to the end, the faster it goes. Maybe that is why so many are stocking up again.
A friend found some Island masks for me — with the Island shape on it. Now I’m looking for a few with the Red Sox logo — does anyone on the Island make these? I know some summer folks who were afraid to come that might treasure these. Besides, it is time for some new ones. But no more flowers.
Here is a special treat. How about a quick virtual trip to Scotland? Our library invites you to take an online tour to Dufftown, Scotland, at 6 pm on Tuesday, Dec 8. Join them as Vicky Keough takes you on a tour of her hometown. Dufftown is on the River Fiddich, near the remains of the Auchindoun Castle. The town hosts a Highland Games event every July (usually). It also produces more malt whiskey than any other town in Scotland. So pour yourself a glass and register with Anne McDonough at [email protected] to visit the “Whisky Capital of the World.”
Next week you can hear Louise Reilly Sacco, who will tell all about the Museum of Bad Art (MOBA). MOBA collects, exhibits, and celebrates art that will be seen in no other venue. She will share this adventure at 6 pm on Monday, Dec 14. This is art too bad to be ignored. I was looking at a small book of their selections, and they certainly have a point. The Louisa Gould Gallery invites you to the annual Small Wonders Show, 12 artists with over 50 new pieces. I was happy to see the name of Donna Blackburn, whom I used to know when she was working at the Edgartown library, happily sharing her time to teach aspiring artists how to draw. I should say trying to do this, at least as far as I was concerned. But she did wonders for my friend and others.
The gallery, open from 11 to 5, also has cards, glass ornaments, and lots of jewelry for everyone on your list. If you are worried about being among other people. you may see works via FaceTime with Louisa.
Did you know that our Vineyard Haven library will lend you a WiFi hotspot for two weeks? I did not even know what it was. It’s a portable device that allows you to connect to the internet through your phone, laptop, or tablet. You can also take it with you wherever you go. You can order one through the catalog. You will be asked to fill out a user agreement before checking out the hotspot. Hotspots may not be renewed and must be returned in person to an employee at the library. I had such a glorious week that I had to be thankful. I received delicious meals and treats. My gas heater was replaced very quickly and with minimal problems. Last time there was a major gas leak, but all went with professional smoothness this time.
Delightful calls from old friends and even neighbors I haven’t seen for a while brightened the holiday. And my daughter and her husband received the good news that they do not have COVID.
I was sorry to hear Heather Angelastro tested positive, but I am pleased to hear she is doing well. Having two active young sons at home for two weeks should probably be a cure for most anything.
I can’t help thinking that all those people who went off for Thanksgiving will probably make any Christmas plans a disaster. I know that is selfish. But their travel may impact any or all of us. Do you realize we have now had a million COVID cases in our country in one week?

I always love the idea that Santa comes by ferry to the fire house because it is deer week on the Island. But you may have to drive by to check the day and time for his visit.
Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out all week and especially tomorrow to Sarah Wajda. Jessie Chandler celebrates on Saturday. Monday is a big day for Rachel Houston and Anna Tomlinson. Polly Renear will mark 92 years on Monday. That is a lot of candles.
