The CCCTC programs being featured in November are Cosmetology and Construction Technology.
These programs are very popular with students because students gain the skills and certifications they need to enter straight into the workforce upon graduation. Even though students can enter the workforce, they may also pursue an alternative path and choose to take advantage of the articulation agreements available for these programs to further their education. Finally, like other programs, businesses know that hiring construction and cosmetology students from the CCCTC means they have skilled workers who can contribute to the success of their business on day one of employment.

There are many benefits for students who choose to enroll in the cosmetology program. For someone who is certain this is what they want to do with their life, enrollment in the CCCTC’s program will jump start their cosmetology, esthetician, or nail tech career before or soon after graduation. Students will learn many aspects of cosmetology skills including business planning for business ownership, financial literacy of cosmetology, running the day to day salon business, state board testing preparation, and pathology of hair, skin, and nails. Enrolling in the cosmetology program in high school saves you the cost of post-secondary cosmetology schooling. It also allows students who choose to continue their education to make money working as a cosmetologist while attending school.

Students who complete the required 1500 hours of classwork will be able to sit for the state board exam upon finishing the coursework and receive their Cosmetology License right away. Students also have the ability to earn their shampoo boutique license at the completion of the internship program through the CCCTC. The cosmetology program has two articulation agreements from two different institutions which have basically the same requirements. Students have the opportunity to get up to 30 hours of credit toward an Associate Degree of Technical Studies through Kent State University and The University of Akron Summit College.

An exemplary student from the cosmetology program is Trishelle Sienerth, a senior from Crestview Local High School. Trishelle passed all junior and senior certification testing for cosmetology available to date. She is currently working through the rest of her 150-hour internship. In addition to excelling in the cosmetology classroom and salon, Trishelle participates as a member of the basketball team, volleyball team, and as a cheerleader at Crestview.

Christy Mays, the cosmetology instructor has an impressive resume that she brings to the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center. Her post-secondary education started at Johnson Bible College for Elementary Education, and she continued her education at Kent State University for Career and Technical Education. She holds multiple licenses including Cosmetology License, Advanced Cosmetology License, Cosmetology Instructor License, and Career and Technical Education License. She worked as a senior stylist at Casals Hair Salon in Canfield, Ohio to start her career. She advanced to become manager of a Casals Nail Salon in Poland. She continued to progress in her career by helping to open the Casals Aveda Institute and was in charge of theory and lab education in Austintown, Ohio. Also, at Casals she served as Hair Show Director. She has also worked as an educator for Wigs for Kids and served as a fundraiser and charity event coordinator as well. While at the Casals Aveda Institute and during her tenure at the CCCTC she has been part of many community service outreach programs. Mrs. Mays has been the cosmetology instructor at the CCCTC for 17 years.

Local Businesses
Salons in the local area benefit the most from students attending the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center’s cosmetology program. Students who pursue a career in cosmetology after graduation provide highly trained and skilled workers to local salons within Columbiana County and the surrounding counties. Local businesses even benefit from the program before students graduate. As a requirement of the program, students complete an internship which offer a variety of opportunities for local businesses while educating the student in cosmetology skills and business management. Oftentimes, the businesses who welcome students in as interns are able to keep that student as an employee after they receive their license.

Student in the Program
CCCTC’S Construction Technology program benefits all students who enter and complete the program in a variety of ways. By enrolling in this program, students are introduced to the many different trades that are encompassed in the field of construction technology. Learning about each of these trades provides each student the opportunity to choose the trade that fits him/her the best when entering the workforce. Being a construction technology student at the CCCTC also introduces students to pathways to continue their education where they can focus on a range of post-secondary disciplines including construction management, construction safety, and civil and structural engineering. Students also have the opportunity to showcase the skills they are learning by competing in the local, regional, and state SkillsUSA competitions in areas such as plumbing or carpentry. These competitions allow students to demonstrate what they have learned by competing against students from other career centers and comprehensive high schools throughout the state of Ohio. By learning these skills for competitions, students will also be prepared to use these skills in the workforce.

Articulation Agreements for the Program
Students who enroll in the construction technology program can earn several credentials including OSHA 10, FIRST AID/CPR, NCCER Core, and NCCER Construction Technology. Construction Technology also has an articulation agreement with Kent State University where students can receive credit for the following courses: Construction Safety including OSHA 30 hour certification card and Construction Technology. By meeting certain requirements, students can earn a total of six (6) credits toward a Bachelor of Science Degree in Construction Management while still being a high school student in the Construction Technology program.

Caden Weekley is an exemplary student in the current senior construction technology class. A student of Wellsville High School, he works very hard in class. His consistency in the classroom makes him a perfect example for his peers of the work ethic needed to succeed. At Wellsville High School, Caden is active in football and wrestling. During his offseason from sports, he works in the field of construction in his hometown.
Instructor Spotlight
Mr. Chance Bricker is the instructor for construction technology. He is a journeyman carpenter by trade with 15 years of field experience ranging from projects entailing Home Remodeling to Nuclear Power Plant service work. He earned a Masters of Education degree from Franciscan University and a Masters of Business Administration degree from Ashland University specializing in project management. Mr. Bricker is also a qualified OSHA 10-30 Outreach trainer. Mr. Bricker is in his 10th year of teaching construction technology at the CCCTC.

CCCTC’s Construction Technology Program Benefits local businesses by providing students who are skilled and trained making them ready for employment on day one on the job. Students who complete the construction technology program have a diverse skill set which makes them able to be hired into a variety of positions by construction or trade businesses in our area who desire skilled workers.
Any student who is interested in enrolling in the Cosmetology or Construction Technology Programs should be prepared to complete the online application starting January 1st. Every program is limited in capacity, so do not hesitate to enroll to ensure you get into the program of your choice.
