A whole host of stars have bared their lives on social media and dared to be criticised by trolls from across the globe. But for some celebrities enough was enough and they decided to delete their accounts. From body shaming to cruel memes, here are 10 stars who deleted their social media accounts, and the reasons why…

The ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’ star deleted her Twitter account after a hacker shared a cryptic message about her then-boyfriend and another woman. She believed that social media was not a “positive thing” for her and has not returned since. She said: “If people can handle that sort of output and input in the social media sphere, more power to them.”

The model took a break from Instagram in 2016 as she needed a “detox” from social media. Kendall claimed she needed some time away as she is always on her phone. She said: “I just wanted to detox. I just wanted a little bit of a break. I’m always on it.”

The comedian deleted his social media accounts in 2018 after people trolled him for his whirlwind engagement to Ariana Grande. Although the couple split, he couldn’t hack the negative comments during their brief romance. Before deleting Instagram, he wrote: “No there’s nothing wrong. No nothing happened. No there’s nothing cryptic about anything. I just don’t wanna be on Instagram anymore. Or on any social media platform. The internet is an evil place and it doesn’t make me feel good.”

The ‘Stranger Things’ star left Twitter in 2018 after she became a cruel meme that paired photos of her with homophobic captions. She later created an account called @Milliestopshate with a message to spread love and positivity and end bullying.

The rapper deleted her Instagram in 2018 following a feud with Azealia Banks. Banks accused Cardi of being a “caricature of a black woman,” but Cardi defended her behaviour. She eventually deleted her account but returned a week later.

The singer signed out of her Instagram account in 2017 after a hacker uploaded a snap of her ex-boyfriend, Justin Bieber, in his birthday-suit. She has since returned to the social network but makes it a habit to delete the app once a week. She said: I delete the app from my phone at least once a week. You can’t avoid it sometimes [reading hurtful remarks]. You fixate on the [negative] ones. They’re not like, ‘You’re ugly.’ It’s like they want to cut to your soul. Imagine all the insecurities that you already feel about yourself and having someone write a paragraph pointing out every little thing — even if it’s just physical.”

She had enough of dealing with trolls on Twitter, writing: “Yeah I can’t do this Twitter no more.. too many trolls…” She also noted that she would return “when I feel like it” and has stuck to her word and apparently hasn’t tweeted since. Her tweets now managed by a team.
