San Francisco’s ‘CAREN Act,’ making racially biased 911 calls illegal, is one step closer to becoming a law

It may soon be illegal to make discriminatory, racially biased 911 calls in San Francisco.

The “CAREN Act” (Caution Against Racially Exploitative Non-Emergencies) was introduced in July at a San Francisco Board of Supervisors meeting by Supervisor Shamann Walton.

The ordinance is one step closer to becoming a law. On Tuesday, the board unanimously passed the act on first read. Next week, the bill has to be voted on again by the board, and then it will be sent to Mayor London Breed to sign.

The ordinance’s name is a twist on “Karen,” the name social media gives people making racially biased 911 calls.

The “CAREN Act” has been met with support and opposition since it was proposed. Several residents wrote letters to the board

N.J. truck driver charged in hit-and-run, illegal U-turn crash that killed 2 on N.Y. highway, cops say

A tractor-trailer driver from New Jersey caused a double-fatal crash on the New York State Thruway just west of Rochester last month when he made an illegal U-turn and fled the scene, authorities said.

The crash took place around 4:15 a.m. on Sept. 4 when a car driving west on the New York State Thruway in Wheatland, Monroe County struck and slid underneath a tractor-trailer trying to make a U-turn across multiple lanes of traffic, officials said.

The tractor-trailer driver — later identified as Campbell — completed the U-turn and began heading east. He pulled off at the next exit, drove into the parking lot of a nearby hotel and removed a piece of debris from the truck before

The ambassadors will maintain a presence at popular entrances to the park and trailheads.

Philadelphia Parks & Recreation’s Park Rangers are on duty at the Wissahickon and other watershed parks to remind residents that swimming in Philadelphia’s rivers, streams, and waterways is prohibited and extremely dangerous—even for the most experienced swimmers. Jumping into these bodies of water from any height can cause serious injury or death.
