STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The St. George Theatre is proud to announce its first ever “virtual” Arts-In-Education series for the 2020-2021 academic year – free of charge to students and educators.
“Due to the on-going health crisis in our community, we understand the hardships that educators will face this upcoming academic year,” said St. George Theatre Restoration Inc. President & CEO Doreen P. Cugno. “While the COVID-19 pandemic does not allow for us to enjoy a show together in our beautiful St. George Theatre, we are thrilled to be bringing the show straight to you and your students, virtually and free!”
The series will feature 12 virtual performances from local and national theatre companies that vary in topics such as math, science, history, arts and culture, civil rights, health and wellness and more.
From October 2020 through May 2021, educators can register to receive a new virtual performance each month complete with accompanying study guides with before and after activities for the students to complete.
“It’s all about the experience at the St. George Theatre,” Cugno adds, “so we encourage you and your students to use your imagination and sit back in a virtual red velour chair, with your treats in hand, and enjoy live performances from your screen.
“Whether you are in the classroom or at home, the St. George Theatre will proudly come to you.”
Educators can make reservations for as many performances as they would like online here. The same form may be used for multiple shows. “Franken-STEM”
Grades: K – 5
Available: October 1st to October 31st
Dr. Frank N. Stein is one of the world’s most famous scientists and has created some of the world’s most amazing inventions! But those inventions would be nothing without YOUR imagination. It will take Science, Technology, Engineering and Math to make his latest masterpiece come to life! This show helps students learn why STEM subjects are so important to the modern world while opening up an exciting world of STEM discovery.

“From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankenweiler”
Grades: 3-6

A desire to escape the sameness of every day turns into a journey of intrigue and self-discovery when Claudia Kincaid and her brother Jamie decide to run away from home. Their final destination: The Metropolitan Museum of Art!

“The Monster Who Ate My Peas”
Grades: K – 3
Available: November 1st – May 31st
Based on the multi-award winning book written by Danny Schnitzlein and illustrated by Matthew Faulkner, ArtsPower’s musical tells the funny and poignant story of a young boy who doesn’t want to eat his peas. When a crafty monster appears underneath his kitchen table, the boy is ready to make a deal with the monster. If the monster eats his peas, the boy will give the monster any of his possessions. First, it’s the boy’s soccer ball. Then, his bike. But, when the monster raises the stakes, will the boy refuse the monster and make the difficult decision to face his own fears? Children and adults alike will be entertained and engaged by this wonderfully written tale about the value of will power.

“Anne of Green Gables”

Anne of Green Gables is the story of a young orphan girl, Anne, who is mistakenly delivered to an older couple looking to adopt a boy to work on their farm in Avonlea on Prince Edward Island. After the couple meets Anne, they decide to keep her. Anne soon makes her home on the farm (called Green Gables), and her spirited nature charms the couple, who begin to see her as a daughter.

“The St. George Theatre Christmas Show”

The Tradition Continues! This community favorite is a high energy, rhinestone-studded series of songs and dances that the whole family will enjoy.

“Meet Dr. King”
Grades: K – 5
Available: January 1st to January 31st
This show is perfect for younger audiences, serving to introduce students to major concepts of Black History like freedom, integration and equality. Meet Dr. King helps young people begin to understand the importance of Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement. Follow along as the play takes us from Dr. King’s life as just a young boy experiencing racism for the first time, to meeting his wife, Coretta, to becoming a pastor and finally a national inspiration.

“Little Red and The Big Bully Wolf”
Grades: K – 3

The woods are scary enough without having to worry about a big bully howling in the shadows! Follow Little Red and meet her friends – the three little pigs, the boy who cried wolf, and more – as they learn to face their fears and stand up to the Big Bully Wolf! “Jackie Robinson”

Jackie Robinson’s number “42” has come to symbolize the triumph of the human spirit over incredible odds. This biographical tale follows the life of Jackie Robinson, the first black baseball player to cross the color lines in the Major Leagues. A real-life hero and a tribute to the power of persistence and determination in the face of adversity, see why Jackie Robinson has inspired so many people both in and out of sports!

“Friend Request”

A series of fun, but serious vignettes, Friend Request explores the good and bad parts of social media and online culture. Technology can be great, but it also comes with some serious temptations and pitfalls. This Bully Prevention show gives your audience practical ways to address issues like cyber bullying, online safety, and understanding the difference between online friends and friends in real life. Help your audiences understand the danger and know how to practice healthy behavior online. Plus, you can make it a part of our whole-school bully prevention package – “Operation Friendship!”

“We Can Do It: American Women in History”

“The Story of Anne Frank”
