Summary

About the Position: John H. Kerr Dam and Reservoir contains 900 miles of wooded shoreline stretched across three counties in Virginia and three in North Carolina. Along this shoreline you can find opportunities to boat, fish, camp, swim, picnic, hike, and hunt. Four campgrounds are operated by the Corps of Engineers.

This is a Seasonal Park Ranger position. The season typically runs from March until November, depending on workload and projects the date may be extended or shortened.

Responsibilities

  • Perform visitor assistance activities including patrol of project land and water areas.
  • Advise visitors concerning safety and proper use of facilities in accordance with established policies and regulations.
  • Take appropriate action to ensure compliance with these policies and regulations including the issuance of warnings and citations, when necessary.
  • Monitor visitation recording equipment and troubleshoot equipment making field repairs when necessary.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain a valid civilian driver?s license.
  • This position requires the incumbent is to attend First Aid and CPR training within 6 months of hire, and annually thereafter.
  • This position requires the incumbent to receive a minimum of 24 hours of personnel protection/unarmed self defense, situational evaluation and tactical communication training within 2 years of employment.
  • This position requires the incumbent to supervise or perform prescribed burns, and/or operate a motor vehicle with one or more passengers on at least a weekly basis, and/or operate flood gates to control water levels on waterway.
  • This position has been identified by DA as a testing designated position (TDP) IAW AR 600-85 and/or EP 600-1-3, as such, incumbent is subject to all provisions of the Drug Testing Program requirements.
  • This position requires the incumbent to be subject the hazards associated with working in and around wooded areas, lakes, and rivers.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work weekends, nights, and holidays. During emergencies, the incumbent may be called on short notice.
  • This position may require the incumbent to obtain a motorboat operator certification within 12 months of entry into the position.
  • This position requires the incumbent to wear prescribed uniform as identified in ER 1130-2-550.
  • This position requires a Pre-appointment physical examination.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens

In order to qualify, you must meet the education or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) enforcing rules and regulations pertaining to the recreational use of parks and facilities; 2) performing safety inspections of recreational facilities and equipment; 3) providing assistance to users regarding locations, and recreational facilities and equipment; AND/OR 4) participating in public recreational activities ensuring compliance with applicable rules and regulations for public safety. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor’s degree with twenty-four semester hours of related course work in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archaeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages.
