NYCFC 0 (0), Tigres 4 (5)

85’: Goal. Tigres. 4-0. Who’s counting anymore.

I’ll let you all know when this is done.

77’: Barraza denies Gignac of a chip. Just goes to show how seriously Tigres takes City.

71’: A quality chance for GMS isn’t even close. What else is new?

69’: Parks comes on for Medina. Andres Jasson makes his debut as well. Why wasn’t Parks starting in the first place?

66’: At least Isi still cares.

3-0 Tigres. 4-0 on aggregate. If you’re still reading, just go to sleep. Nothing to see here.

Ricardo Ferretti is shown to be infuriated with his team, despite them being up 3-0 on aggregate. That’s the difference between us and them. Tigres demand excellence. City is satisfied with mediocrity.

Glad to see City finally get creative when they’re already THREE GOALS DOWN! Ugggh, I can’t. I thought we were done with being disappointed this year.

54’: City almost convert on a corner, but it’s saved.

And again!

49’: Tigres pretty much end it. Quiones burns Matarrita (again) down the right wing before centering the ball to an unmarked attacker. 2-0 on the night. 3-0 on aggregate.

The second half is underway. City got a lot of work to do. Two goals needed.

HT: NYCFC trail Tigres 1-0, which translates to a 2-0 deficit on aggregate.

It’s been smash and grab for the Tigers tonight. But it’s all that’s been needed. NYCFC has possessed the ball for the majority of the night, but one good chance for Gignac has put City in a 1-0 (2-0) hole.

I could go on and on about how it’s not over — that if NYC can put together two goals with conceding another, they’d actually go through on away goals. But let’s face it… has anything this team’s done this season give you any confidence in these kind of situations? Not me.

Anything’s possible. But I firmly expect another knockout tonight.

45’: All it is is half chances for NYCFC tonight.

30’: Gignac heads one in. An outstretched Barraza gets a touch, but it’s not enough. Tigres now have a 2-0 aggregate lead. There will be no penalties tonight. City now need two goals to advance.

26’: Big play from Barraza! The former Marquette keeper makes himself as big as possible and keeps the aggregate deficit at one goal.

13’: Matarrita tried to bury one from distance. But the shot harmlessly sails over the bar.

6’: Good flow to the start of this one. Both teams seem determined and ready to go. No real signs of rust for City thus far.

We’re off in Orlando! NYCFC currently trails 1-0 on aggregate, but can make things interesting with just one goal. Mind you, away goals are still the tiebreaker.

Lineup is out! As announced, Luiz Barraza plays in place of the absent Sean Johnson. The defensive corps of Ronald Matarrita, Maxime Chanot, Alex Callens, and Anton Tinnerholm remains intact.

Things get interesting in the midfield where Cacha Acevedo will be the lone defensive pivot with Maxi Moralez and Jesus Medina in front of him as attack-minded midfielders, though it’s possible Ronny Deila could experiment with Medina at the No. 8. Ismael Tajouri-Shradi, Gary Mackay-Steven, and Ismael Tajouri-Shradi make up the attacking three.

The story: It’s been nine long months since New York City FC and Tigres UANL met in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals on March 11, 2020. It was the last day of normalcy before the sports world came to a screeching half as the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic ripped through North America.

And last time out, it wasn’t a fun experience.

Despite dominating their Mexican foes throughout the first half, NYCFC couldn’t find the back of the net and were put into a 1-0 aggregate hole after Tigres’ Eduardo Vargas — who is no longer with the club — tapped in a late rebound at Red Bull Arena.

With the MLS season firmly behind them, NYCFC travel to the CCL bubble in Orlando where they will avoid the historic MLS pitfall of having to play away in Mexico. Unfortunately, they will be worse for wear.

James Sands remains out with a fractured foot, as does Héber who is out with an ACL injury. Shortly after their playoff run was unceremoniously cut short, team captain Alex Ring underwent minor knee surgery which will keep him out of competition. To make matters worse, NYCFC will be without longtime netminder Sean Johnson due to him being labelled as being in close contact with a player who tested positive for COVID-19 last week.

Despite the plethora of absences, New York City have tons of capable players to pool from.

Luiz Barraza will get the start in place of Johnson, while Nicolas “Cacha” Acevedo could get a much welcome insertion into the lineup. City also now have the talents of Academy product Andres Jasson up front. Despite not being under contract for next season, Gary Mackay-Steven is still in talks with the club for a possible 2021 return and did travel with the team to Orlando.

This post will update with highlights and information as we receive it.
