Miracle League of the Lakeshore opens registration
Registration is now open to both players and community volunteers for the 2021 Miracle League of the Lakeshore season.
Miracle League is a program that gives children ages 4-19 with intellectual and/or physical disabilities the chance to play organized baseball in a noncompetitive league on a safe, accessible field with a synthetic surface. Each player is paired with a community volunteer. Community volunteers also serve as coaches, announcers and umpires during the typical eight-week season.
The Miracle League of the Lakeshore is entering its seventh season at Goodwill Miracle Field of Dreams at Miracles Park in Manitowoc.
The deadline to register is March 29, and players will be notified of their team in early May. The $45 fee includes a team jersey, cap, team picture, player insurance and end-of-the-season award.
The season starts June 7, with games played Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:30 and 7 p.m. Each participant plays one game a week. Volunteers are needed to serve as buddies for the players.
The Miracle League of the Lakeshore also offers an over-19 All-Star League. Individuals older than 19 with intellectual and physical disabilities are encouraged to play. The All-Star League plays on Wednesday nights. This will be the third season of this league.

Portion of South Eighth Street to close Friday
South Eighth Street between Washington and Hancock streets in Manitowoc is scheduled to be closed to through traffic on Friday starting around 7 a.m., weather permitting.
The city said the road is being closed for work at the Manitowoc County Courthouse.
The road is expected to be reopened to traffic no later than 3 p.m. Friday. Traffic will be detoured around the closure.
Wisconsin Maritime Museum to reopen after COVID-19 closure
The Wisconsin Maritime Museum, 75 Maritime Drive, Manitowoc, said it will reopen to the public on March 26 after being closed since October 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The museum said it will continue to follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines after opening and will have a limited capacity and require visitors to wear masks and to try to stay 6 feet apart. It will also offer tours of the USS Cobia submarine “in a way that minimizes time inside the submarine,” the museum said.

City to use grant funds to plant trees at Red Arrow Park
Manitowoc recently received a $500 Community Planting Grant from the American Transmission Corporation.
The city said the funds will be used to plant trees at Red Arrow Park after 20 trees infected with emerald ash borer were removed from the park in the past few months.
Manitowoc Parks & Recreation shares upcoming programs
Manitowoc Parks & Recreation Department, 3330 Custer St., is sharing the following updates:
- The Winter Walking Program continues at the Citizen Park Recreation Center gym from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Mondays-Fridays through April 23. There will be no walking on March 31, April 1 or April 2. The program is free and open to the public. Those walking are asked to bring a clean pair of shoes. Masks and social distancing are required. Citizen Park is at 930 N. 18th St., Manitowoc.
- Spring volleyball registration closes on March 12. Leagues are available for co-ed on Mondays, men’s on Wednesdays and women’s on Thursdays. The season starts March 22. - Registration for the Manitowoc Parks & Recreation “Bunny Hop 5K” closes March 15. The virtual event will run March 29-April 5. Registration is $30 per participant. Those who register will get a Parks & Recreation bag filled with prizes, including a commemorative medallion. Two extra competitions include a Bunny Hunt, where participants can count bunnies while out, and Show Us Your Run, where participants can take screenshots of their running app to be entered in a drawing for a Parks & Recreation gift card. Clipper City Chordsmen names Jim Rasmus 2020 Barbershopper of the Year
Clipper City Chordsmen President Jim Rasmus was named the 2020 Barbershopper of the Year by the Manitowoc chorus.
The award is a special recognition presented to a Chordsmen member who “has gone above and beyond what is normally expected and has benefited the entire chapter as a result.”
The award was presented at the group’s annual meeting held via Zoom on Jan. 26.
The group also awarded Chorus Director Dave Buss with the coveted Sparkplug Award.
Historical Society to host online trivia night
Manitowoc County Historical Society will host an online local history trivia night from 7 to 8 p.m. March 10.
The free program will be held over Zoom and participants will use the Kahoot! app.
There will be three rounds, each focusing on topics associated with Manitowoc County history.

Two Rivers Junior Optimist Octagon Club donates snowman bags to daycare centers
The Two Rivers Junior Optimist Octagon Club offered a new project this year. They donated 50 snowman bags to the Creative Learning Day Care Center and Tiny Treasures Day Care.
The bags contained a book about snowmen, a foam craft snowman for the children to make at home, snacks and a pair of mittens.
ADRC offers series on dementia
The dementia care specialist with the Aging & Disability Resource Center of the Lakeshore will be offering an educational series on the topic of dementia.
The first part of the series, Dementia 101, is offered online from 1 to 2 p.m. March 18 and features information about the basics of dementia. The second part of the series, Dementia 201, is offered online from 1 to 2 p.m. April 6.

Michibago Music Teachers Association meeting set for March 19
