Infectious disease experts are urging the public, now more than ever, to get vaccinated against the flu. The added urgency stems in part from the symptoms it shares with COVID-19 and concerns about confusing them. (Sept. 14)

Health Department to offer drive-through flu shot clinic for kids in late October

Manitowoc County Health Department has scheduled a drive-through flu shot clinic for children ages 6 months to 18 years old from 2 to 5 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Manitowoc County Expo Center, 4921 Expo Drive.

The influenza vaccine will be free, no appointment is necessary. The Health Department said no insurance restrictions apply, but children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

A limited supply of only injectable vaccines will be offered and it will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Forms will be available online the week prior to the clinic at www.manitowochelthdept.info and can be filled out beforehand to minimize the wait and accelerate the vaccination process at the clinic.

Those attending are asked to enter the Expo grounds at the Vista Road and Expo Drive entrance and make their way toward the Ice Center. A worker will then instruct participants on where to go based on if they have completed the registration forms.

Those attending the clinic who are age 2 or older are required to wear a face mask. It is also encouraged that children age 2 and older wear clothing that can easily expose the upper arm for a shot.

If you or an immediate family member is sick, in isolation, in quarantine or experiencing COVID-19-like symptoms, you are asked to not attend the clinic.

HFM Lean on the Lakeshore postponed until 2021

Holy Family Memorial has announced it is postponing Lean on the Lakeshore — an annual community weight loss challenge — until 2021. It said the decision was made amid the current challenges of the coronavirus pandemic and to ensure the health and safety of the community.

“The impact of COVID-19 has not been lost on any of us,” said Joni Shavlik, LOL program coordinator. “We realize this may be disappointing news to past participants, but we are taking this as an opportunity to reassess the program and look forward to bringing new events and activities — once it’s again safe to do so.”

HFM said it will share information as soon as a new kick-off date is determined.

Shavlik is encouraging individuals to stay proactive and continue to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle during the pandemic.

“As we enter the fall and winter season, the entire community is encouraged to pursue exercise opportunities that operate within CDC guidelines,” she said. “Having a good exercise routine, managing stress and eating nutritious meals will help boost the immune system and maintain a defense against the coronavirus.”
