FOXWOODS, CT — Foxwoods is cutting back its operations due to the coronavirus surge, according to WTNH. The move includes temporary furloughs of more than 100 employees.
Temporary closures include the Fox Tower hotel, the Rainmaker casino, and the Grand Cedar Hotel. Performances at the Grand Theater have also been halted.
Foxwoods interim CEO Jason Guyot said that the business has had to make “a painful choice” and that ultimately the moves will preserve “as many jobs as possible,” according to NBC CT.
Both Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun closed in mid-March at the start of the pandemic and began a phased reopening in June.
Foxwoods recently announced a partnership with DraftKings to try to bring online sports betting to the state. DraftKings and the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe estimate that online gambling and sports betting will generate $175 million in revenue for Connecticut over five years. DraftKings operates live mobile sports betting in 10 states.
Sports gambling and gambling expansion in Connecticut has been a complicated issue. Around 20 states have legalized sports betting after a 2018 U.S. Supreme Court decision, according to ESPN.
