There may be a few changes to your Chinese New Year celebrations this year, but you can still have some festive fun with the kids all the same! From festive installations, displays, theme parks to fun workshops, you and the whole family can still make this year’s Lunar New Year a memorable one. 

If you haven’t decided on what to do for Chinese New Year, here are a few kid-friendly activities all across Singapore that you can’t miss out on!

Gather the family for a prosperous celebration at Capitol Singapore. They have transformed their domes into pretty festive installations and visit their stores for a special Spring Fair where you can indulge in an abundance of goodies, decorative ornaments, artisanal shops and more! You might also like to try auspicious, and fortune enhancing feasts at The Capitol Kempinski Hotel Singapore or practice your creative skills at their many Spring Craft Workshops where you can personalise your own leather projects, pick up calligraphy or decorate wood art.

  • Dahlia Dreams at Gardens by the Bay

Usher in the Year of the Ox at the picturesque scenes inside the Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay where you and the kids can stroll through about 2,000 pretty dahlias as well as their other festive installations. You can expect golden moon gates made out of more than 200 red lanterns and a Chinese Pavillion signifying perfection and unity for the event highlights. And, of course, what’s a Chinese New Year celebration without lion dance performances. It would also be the first time that the dome will be featuring in-house grown blooms by their own horticulturists so make sure not to miss it this Lunar New Year.

Like everything else this new year, the annual Chingay Festival will be a little different this time around as they will be going digital for the first time. You can tune in to their official website and join in on the festivities of their special webcast Light of Hope where over 2,000 performers and spectacular performances to ring in the ‘Niu’ year. There may not be a physical parade; you can still enjoy a 100-lion dance performance from the comfort of your homes. If you visit their website, you may also be part of various festive activities, and you might even win special prizes!

  • LEGO Festive Carnival at CapitaLand Malls

The LEGO installations at CapitaLand are here to stay to celebrate the Lunar New Year for their Festive Carnival. This time around your favourite LEGO blocks are all dressed up for the Year of the Ox offering prosperity awards and gifts including limited-edition LEGO Lantern and more! If you’re around one of CapitaLand’s malls, make sure to drop by and take pictures of the whole family beside the festive LEGO display to commemorate your visit.

Celebrate the Lunar New Year with 100,00 marine animals at S.E.A. Aquarium where you get to enjoy Spring in the Sea. You can follow the Trail of Fortune and find the hidden gold ingots within the aquarium and take photos to win prizes or participate in their DIY Dragon Wall that the kids will surely enjoy sticking scales to their sea dragon mural. Before you leave, don’t forget to take a quick photo with their mythical sea dragon installation for a memorable souvenir of your festive visit to the aquarium.

  • Street Light-up in Chinatown

If you’re around the area, make sure to drop by Chinatown where they will be ushering in the Year of the Ox with their light displays and other festive installations such as lanterns, golden ingots and flowers. Alongside the safety measures due to Covid-19, there won’t be that much Chinese New Year goodies at Chinatown, but you can still watch as their main streets light up to ring in another year.

Your favourite Universal Studios characters are ready to usher in the Lunar New Year as their park is open for all families to enjoy the fun festivities. Take pictures with Po, Shrek, the Minions and many more are dressed up for Festive Meet and Greets. Stick around, and you might also catch their Majestic Dragon or hear Mandarin greetings from Optimus Prime and Megatron. Don’t forget to try their spring specials as the park will also offer Chinese New Year flavours for a complete festive experience.

  • Wan Qing Festival of Spring 2021 at SYSNMH

At the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall, you and the kids can participate in their festive programmes and workshops. This includes a Children’s Lion Dance Workshop where the whole family can try on miniature lion dance costumes and even be trained by expert instructors or maybe try out their Chinese Drums Workshop to learn basic drumming techniques with your child. Release your inner creative side at their available Craft Stations for Zodiac Animal Coaster Painting and Zodiac Animal Clay Painting. Don’t forget to take a quick family photo outside beside their Festive Installation that features two large “Foo Dou” Guardian Lions.
