Calabasas Mayor Pens Letter To Community

Calabasas Mayor Alicia Weintraub recently penned a letter to the community. The letter in its entirety is below:

Another week of summer has gone by and tomorrow we move into the month of August. Everybody thought we would be farther along in the journey to dealing with COVID-19, but the question we all wish we had the answer to is when will all of this be over?

One thing however is very clear and that is we all need to work together to get this virus under control. Getting our numbers down will allow schools to open more quickly and businesses to resume more normal operations. I am sure the goal of returning to normal is something that we can all agree on

The one thing that we can all do to help fight COVID-19 in Calabasas is to wear a face covering. I don’t mean to sound like a broken record, but we collectively need to do better on this front. The City is working not only with the Sheriff on enforcement, but also working with HOA’s, shopping center managers, small businesses and our recreation partners, but sadly this is not enough to counter the complaints we continue to receive regarding people not wearing masks in businesses, parks and neighborhoods. The City has placed signs throughout the community reminding people to cover their faces and sadly many of these signs have been vandalized and discarded.

Regardless of how you feel about the issue, we are advised by health care professionals that covering your face can help protect both you and the people you encounter. Face coverings are also a California, LA County and City of Calabasas mandate. As everyone knows there is also now a fine in place for not wearing a mask in the City of Calabasas.

The impacts to our local businesses from this pandemic is greater than anyone could have ever predicted. We are doing everything we can to support our local economy. We are working to help businesses stay open by allowing them to operate outdoors. Today, we have a half-dozen business approved for Temporary Use Permits to move their indoor operations outdoors. Others business have applied for these permits and we are working with them to make sure they follow all the rules to ensure public health, safety and ADA access requirements.

By moving a business outside, it makes it easier to avoid the Three C’s: Crowds, confined spaces and close contact with others.

As we continue to find ways to adapt to this new normal and foster a sense of community, you will see many changes to the fall recreation brochure. This brochure comes out online the second week of August and registration for our great programs starts on August 17th. We will have more than 100 amazing programs available online this fall. Our online classes have been an overwhelming success with more than two-thousand people participating during this pandemic.

Before the pandemic hit, we had zero online classes. We are proud of the work that our Community Services Department and Communications Department have done to keeping our programs engaging and allowing our residents to feel connected to one another.

I want to make sure that you are aware of two great events coming up. Tomorrow, is our twice-monthly e-waste event from 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. at the Albertsons shopping center at Las Virgenes and Agoura Road. In two weeks, on the 15th, we are working with the Sheriff’s Department to hold a big event for e-waste disposal and paper document disposal. It will be held at the Sheriff’s Lost Hills Station on Agoura Road from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Information on both of these events can be found on the City’s website at www.cityofcalabasas.com.

One more thing I want to mention. If you see something that requires the City’s immediate attention (say, a pothole, a public safety concern, or a business not following the health order rules), please contact us at City Hall via email or phone, in addition to posting on social media. This will help us address these concerns as quickly as possible.

It is truly an honor to be your mayor. Have a great weekend.
Alicia
