There’s a tired, and mistaken, stereotype out there that female comedians just aren’t as funny as male ones. In the past several years, women comics have put that myth to death by headlining big festivals, landing buzzed-about TV specials and starring in some of the biggest movies around. Whether they’re killing it in the clubs, cracking wise online or popping up on screens small and big, here are 20 women comics you should pay attention to.

Aparna Nancherla
The voice of Hollyhock on BoJack Horseman and featured comic on Season 2 of The Standups has been performing since 2002. Her self-described “dry, existential, and absurd” brand of humour, which frequently focuses on her personal struggles with depression and anxiety, has allowed her to perform in big venues like Carnegie Hall and at the Great American Comedy Festival. She also has more than 584,000 followers on Twitter , and often posts hilarious, relatable and compassionate takes on mental health.

Tig Notaro
She was born Mathilde O’Callaghan Notaro, but comedy fans know her better as Tig Notaro, the Grammy-nominated comic who’s famous for her deadpan delivery and ability to spin comedy gold out of tragedy, including her battle with breast cancer. The diagnosis came at a time when Notaro’s life was in turmoil for a host of other reasons, but she has said one of the best ways to ease the tension and pain is to laugh. She’s appeared in many TV comedy specials, is a frequent face on the talk-show circuit and currently hosts the hilarious Under a Rock with Tig Notaro where she interviews famous people she’s never heard of.
