Manhattan Beach ‘Pierspective’ Physical Exhibit Tour Now Online

MANHATTAN BEACH, CA — “Pierspective,” a community art exhibit designed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Manhattan Beach Pier, is now available to view online. The art exhibit is sponsored by the City of Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation Department and has rolled out two online ways to view submissions and the actual exhibit hung inside the city’s Cultural Arts Center.

The newest portion of the exhibit is the physical tour of the 75 selections chosen to be in it. A few months ago, the city posted all of the submissions online, including ones that did not make it into the exhibition because they received so many [156]. The new video allows you to walk through the cultural arts building with two narrators to see and learn about the pieces.

The Parks and Recreation Department had to take the exhibition online and virtual due to COVID-19. Normally, the selected artworks would be installed in the Cultural Arts Center, there’d be a kickoff celebratory evening and then the exhibit would remain open to the public to visit.

The landmark Manhattan Beach Pier is the oldest concrete pier on the West Coast and was built in 1920. It celebrated its 100th birthday on July 5 but was closed that day due to Los Angeles County Department of Public Health restrictions due to COVID-19. The Manhattan Beach Historical Society also created an online history of Manhattan Beach piers that goes back to piers built before the current one.

All 156 submissions can be found online on the Parks and Recreation Department’s page. The video tour with Acting Cultural Arts Supervisor Eric Brinkman and Acting Cultural Arts Manager Eilen Stewart is 16 minutes long. They reference the artists’ statements about their pieces as the two move through the exhibit. That video is embedded with this article for convenient viewing and can also be found on the city website.
